Guidelines for effective mailing list participation.

Before Posting

  • Search the archives to see if your question has been answered
  • Check the documentation and FAQ
  • Make sure you're subscribed to the list
  • Choose the appropriate list for your topic

Writing Your Message

Subject Line

Use a clear, specific subject that summarizes your topic:

  • Good: "Build failure with arm-none-eabi-gcc 10.3 on Ubuntu 22.04"
  • Poor: "Help needed" or "Question"

Message Body

For technical questions, include:

  • What you're trying to accomplish
  • What you've tried
  • Error messages or unexpected behavior
  • Environment details (OS, toolchain versions)
  • Steps to reproduce the issue

Formatting

  • Use plain text email, not HTML
  • Keep lines to reasonable length (~72 characters)
  • Quote relevant context when replying, but trim unnecessary text
  • Reply inline or below quoted text, not above

Patches

When submitting patches:

  • Use git format-patch to create patches
  • Include a clear description of what the patch does and why
  • One logical change per patch
  • Test your patches before submitting

Etiquette

  • Be patient waiting for responses
  • Be respectful and constructive
  • Accept feedback gracefully
  • Help others when you can
