Guidelines for effective mailing list participation.
Before Posting
- Search the archives to see if your question has been answered
- Check the documentation and FAQ
- Make sure you're subscribed to the list
- Choose the appropriate list for your topic
Writing Your Message
Subject Line
Use a clear, specific subject that summarizes your topic:
- Good: "Build failure with arm-none-eabi-gcc 10.3 on Ubuntu 22.04"
- Poor: "Help needed" or "Question"
Message Body
For technical questions, include:
- What you're trying to accomplish
- What you've tried
- Error messages or unexpected behavior
- Environment details (OS, toolchain versions)
- Steps to reproduce the issue
Formatting
- Use plain text email, not HTML
- Keep lines to reasonable length (~72 characters)
- Quote relevant context when replying, but trim unnecessary text
- Reply inline or below quoted text, not above
Patches
When submitting patches:
- Use
git format-patchto create patches - Include a clear description of what the patch does and why
- One logical change per patch
- Test your patches before submitting
Etiquette
- Be patient waiting for responses
- Be respectful and constructive
- Accept feedback gracefully
- Help others when you can
